How Puppet Festival Mississauga Began

Bridges Puppet Festival Poster 2020

Puppet Festival Mississauga, originally known as Bridges Festival, made its debut on March 13, 2020. As the pandemic hit, the festival was forced to adapt quickly, transitioning to online events to continue bringing puppetry to audiences. Despite the challenges, the festival has grown stronger each year, returning to in-person events in 2022 and expanding its reach in 2023 under its new name, Puppet Festival Mississauga.

The First Festival: Bridges Festival
The First Puppet Festival Mississauga, launched as Bridges Festival in March 2020, faced challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic. Only one show was performed before shutdowns. Puzzle Theatre from Montreal opened with Plastique, and large-scale puppets, including a giant dragon, were displayed outdoors, receiving a tremendous audience response.
Bridges Festival 2021
In 2021, Bridges Festival returned online with support from the Department of Canadian Heritage. The team learned new skills like camera operations and SEO. The virtual format expanded the audience to 23 countries. The festival featured three full days of puppetry and animated short films, successfully completing all activities.
Bridges Festival 2022
In March 2022, Bridges Festival returned with in-person and online events for children and families, despite COVID-19 restrictions. The festival featured puppet shows, animated shorts, workshops, and citywide discovery events. Partnerships with Maple Magic Festival, Red FM, and others contributed to its success, showcasing a vibrant third edition.
Puppet Festival Mississauga 2023
In 2023, Bridges Festival rebranded as Puppet Festival Mississauga. The fourth edition brought puppetry and animation to Mississauga, with great excitement for the future. The team was thrilled to continue showcasing these art forms and looked forward to what was coming next.
