Haneul Yi

Haneul Yi is a Korean-Canadian actor. He is a former member of Crane Creations Theatre Company’s Summer Ensemble in 2020. Haneul is the recipient of the 2021 Jon Kaplan Legacy Fund Award. Haneul Yi is currently a participant of the Musical Stage Company’s 2021-2022 RBC apprenticeship program.

Training

Haneul Yi is a graduate of the Honours Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance of Sheridan College.

Theatre Experience

Haneul Yi’s recent theatre and training credits include Spring Awakening, by Sheridan College. In the Broadway Hit musical, Haneuel plays the role of Mortiz. He was also the associative Musical Directorr. Haneul Yi was a troupe member of the Charlottetown Festival Young Company, presenting the musical “Aqsarniit” (or “the Northern Lights” in Inuktitut).

Musical Experience

Hanuel plays many instruments, including the guitar. Haneul Yi is a singer-songwriter. Haneul Yi is also a music director and arranger. You can view Haneul Yi’s Youtube Channel’s to see him play guitar, sing and compose music. Haneul is a talented Canadian-Korean artist.

He is a very skilled guitar player. Haneul is also a great guitar teacher. His ability to play the guitar, even an out of tune one, is phenomenal. During his time as a Summer Ensemble member Haneul generously lent his musical talents to the team, whether through the creation of musical elements during workshops, or serenading the team during lunch breaks with his guitar.

Content Creation

Hanuel is also a content creator and has written articles for Arts Guide Mississauga, about the top 10 easiest instruments to learn for beginner musicians, and the Carrassauga Festival. The Carrasauga Festival is Canada’s biggest multi-cultural festival. The Carrasauga Festival takes place every year in Mississauga.

Awards

Haneul is the recipient of the 2021 Jon Kaplan Award. Haneul won the John Kaplan Legacy Fund Award for Graduating Student from a Canadian Theatre School, and won a prize of $1,000.

What Is The Jon Kaplan Award?

The Jon Kaplan Award is a Canadian theatre award established to support Canadian artistic in all stages of their careers. Each year an award is presented to a student in a post secondary Canadian theatre school, a young Canadian playwright and a Canadian stage performer. The awards are based on merit and need and are determined by a rotating panel of theatre professionals. Each year the Fund chooses a specific theatre school, with faculty members nominating graduating students. The Fund is created in Jon Kaplan’s Legacy,  an integral part of the Canadian theatre scene, was a theatre writer and reviewer for Toronto’s NOW Magazine. He passed away in 2017.

Summer Ensemble

Hanuel Yi is a 2020 Summer Ensemble Member.

What is the Summer Ensemble?

The Summer Ensemble is an 8 week training program for theatre artists. In this paid working opportunity artists learn skills required to be a professional artist in Canada, and gain valuable insights into the theatre industry in Canada and abroad. To apply artists must be between 18 and 30 years of age.

He was one of the first summer ensemble members to join the team in June 2020, at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to lock down restrictions a large portion of the program was conducted over zoom. Hanuel as well as the rest of Crane Creations Summer Ensemble handled the transition beautifully, and Haneul was quickly able to adapt his talents to a Zoom’s online platform.

What different types of revenue does a not-for-profit theatre company earn? Which fees do I pay the artists, the director and the designers? These are things that you will discover with the help of Crane Creations Theatre Company Artistic Director Andreja Kovac.

Andreja has worked on projects with budgets over $5 million. She is an expert in project management, has the equivalent of an MFA in directing from her home country of Slovenia, and is also a graduate of Canada’s National Theatre School directing program.

Andreja Kovac is a successful theatre director from Slovenia who graduated from the National Theatre School’s Directing program. She is the founding Artistic Director of Crane Creations Theatre Company, and is committed to helping emerging artists transition into the professional field, and understand the business of theatre.

What Is An Actor?


An actor or actress is a person who portrays a character in a performance. The actor performs in the theatre, film, radio, television, or digital media. The analogous Greek term is ὑποκριτής. The meaning translates to “one who answers”.

What Does An Actor Do?


An actor’s doesn’t just memorize lines and look pretty. An actor has a fun but important role in creating a story. They are responsible for interpreting and embodying the character in a play, television series, or film. To do this well many actors rehearse and train their bodies and voices regularly. They study their script and consult with the director and scene partners about their interpretation of the character.

The main concern of an actor should always be understanding what a character wants or needs and then what they are is doing to achieve this action. A want or a need is also called an objective, or motivation. What an actor is doing is referred to an action or a tactic. An Actor Acts. A good actor makes many different and thoughtful choices about what the character is doing. A very good actor can make many creative choices, and is always ready to change their actions on the fly. Actors sometimes require additional special skills. For example, an actor in a Broadway musical may also need to know how to sing and dance. An actor is a puppet show must know how to operate a puppet. Professional Improvisers need to know how to create a character and make up a story on the spot without any preparation. An actor in an action blockbuster film may also be trained in stage combat and martial arts.

Romeo And Juliet


Haneul is a cast member Crane Creations Theatre Company’s 2020 workshop production of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Hanuel is a cast member alongside his fellow team members, Aimee Poulin, Eugenia De Jong, Joel Koshy, Alex Cameron, Layla Ainsley and Lennon Bradford. Haneul Yi played the role of Nurse, and the role of Lady Capulet. Today, the roles of Nurse and Lady Capulet are typically played by female actors. Haneul took on two traditionally female cast roles, playing the Nurse as a man, and Lady Capulet as a man. Using his fantastic acting skills Hanuel Yi, took on challenge of creating a gender-bent Romeo and Juliet, playing a male nurse and a male Lady Capulet. Playing Shakespeare’s female roles as a man, Haneul Yi was able to bring to life a brand new interpretation of these characters.

Mirror


Haneul Yi also worked on Mirror, a brand new play in development. Mirror is a new play in development. Mirror is a Musical Puppetry Show for young children. The play is written by Former Summer Ensemble Member. Eugenia De Jong. Mirror is about four forest creatures who find a strange object in the middle of a forest and must work together to figure out what it is. The play is inspired by “The Little Mirror” written by Grigor Vitez.Haneul workshopped the role, during his weeks as a Summer Ensemble Member. Haneul was cast in the role of Squirrel, a clever but greedy animal who loves to eat acorns. In his role as Squirrel, Hanuel shows off his amazing improvisation, comedic and clown skills. Hanuel has been delighting audiences, in local  to local outdoor Parks across Port Credit and Clarkson, playing the role of Squirrel in Mirror. Haneul fantastic comedic skills, provided inspiration for the character of Squirrel, which is now in development as a puppet show.

Terror


Haneul Yi is also part of original workshops of the play Terror. Crane Creations Theatre Company presents  Canadian premier the Canadian premier on November 26th 2021, in Clarke Hall Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Haneul played the role of Lars Koch in the original workshops, a fighter pilot on trial for multiple murder, after shooting down a hijacked passenger flight.

 

What is Terror About?


Terror is a courtroom drama, written by one of the most successful German contemporary writers, Ferdinand von Schirach. The play questions the idea of a means justifying an end and warns against quantifying human life. The audience serves as a jury at the trial of a fighter jet pilot. He is accused of killing 164 passengers off a commercial airplane, hijacked by terrorists, heading towards a soccer stadium with 70,000 people. The end of the play depends on the verdict of the audience.

 

New Play Development


Haneul Yi is a former Summer Ensemble member, who was in a workshop of a play by Nicole Bonder. Nicole Bonder is 2019 Crane Creations Summer Ensemble Member. Nicole Bonder is the process of working on a new play, which she first developed during her time at Crane Creations in the Summer Ensemble 2019. The play explores the idea of creation and contains theological and philosophical themes. Nicole Bonder is inspired by the creation story of Adam and Eve. The show plays with the form of theatre, and mixes improvisation and text in the hopes of creating a brand new show, with a brand new cast every night.

Why We Love Hanuel!

Haneul Yi is amazing Korean food conisseour. Hanuel became a favourite team member because he would offer the team the best Korean snacks, and his dad’s Gimbap. Kimbap, or Gimbap is a Korean food that is similar to Japanese sushi. “Gim” translates to seaweed in English. “Bap” transates to Rice in English.
