Samurai's Daughter:
A March Break Puppet Show in Mississauga

The Samurai’s Daughter is based on the Japanese folktale Hime with the Big Hat and brought to life through the refined artistry of Takeda Marionette techniques. The story follows Ume, a mysterious young girl who travels with a large rice bowl covering her head. No one knows who she is or why she hides beneath it—except Itharou, the Shogun’s youngest son, who chooses kindness over ridicule and becomes her friend.

Together, Ume and Itharou set out to break the spell of the bowl, facing obstacles that test their honesty, devotion, and courage. Their journey reveals a touching truth: happiness is something we create for ourselves.

Guided by the mentorship of Senju Takeda, the performance highlights the precision, elegance, and beauty of Japanese puppet theatre. Crafted from authentic Japanese materials, the puppets enrich a story that speaks to both children and adults. The Samurai’s Daughter celebrates pure love, inner kindness, and the belief that faith and honesty can open any door.
