Malachy and the Elephant is a moving one-act play exploring confinement, immigration, and loss through two intertwined perspectives, while weaving in moments of unexpected humour. Malachy, an aging Irish prisoner in the Don Jail, reflects on his difficult journey to Canada—marked by prejudice, isolation, and a descent into alcoholism and crime. Through a prison work program, he is assigned to the Riverdale Zoo, where he cares for Princess Rita, an elephant captured in Mozambique and forced into a life of display.

Though Rita cannot speak, her story echoes Malachy’s: both are displaced, confined, and stripped of control over their lives. As Malachy tends to her, an unlikely bond forms – offering warmth, wit, and understanding within an otherwise harsh reality.

Blending memory and imagination, the play draws powerful parallels between human and animal captivity, balancing emotional depth with humour. At its heart, Malachy and the Elephant is a story about connection in unlikely places, and the resilience of two beings navigating lives shaped by forces beyond their control.
