About Summer Ensemble
Summer Ensemble is an annual on the job training for emerging artists. In the last five years Summer Ensemble has employed more than 70 artists. Many of them are members of less represented communities such as immigrants, and people of colour. Actors, stage managers, directors, designers, and producers who are starting their careers, work with Crane Creations Theatre Company for eight weeks. They produce new work and learning about the industry. Past participants from this program are working at large Canadian theatres. Companies include The Shaw Festival, Canadian Stage, Crow’s Theatre and others. Summer Ensemble offers an uprecedented opportunity to work in culture and learn while being paid professional rates.
Summer Ensemble is generously supported by Employment and Social Development Canada, Ontario Arts Council, and the City of Mississauga.
On June 5th, 2023 sixteen talented emerging artists set foot into a theatre, and only four days later they performed a line up of eleven short plays written by eleven Canadian playwrights. This unique intergenerational exchange is part of Crane Creations’ mission to use theatre as a mean of dialogue between members of different communities.
In the next stage of the collaboration 6 plays will be workshopped and fully staged on July 8th and July 9th at Maja Prentice Theatre in Mississauga.
About the selection process
We selected six out of eleven plays to proceed into the next round of collaboration between Crane Creations’ and Theatre InspiraTO.
The selection process was conducted with a vote. Members of Summer Ensemble offering emerging artists an opportunity to excercise leadership and curate a program of a mini festival. Using electronic forms each team member cast a vote ranking plays from 1 to 11. The results were tallied up and in a moment of great suspense, 6 plays that will proceed into a workshopping stage and receive a full production were announced.
