ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Danai Gurira is an award-winning actress and playwright. Some other works include the Continuum which won her the OBIE Award, Outer Critics Award, and the Helen Hayes Award. Eclipsed which got a Tony Award Nomination for Best Play, the NAACP award, the Helen Hayes Award for Best New Play, and the Connecticut Critics Circle Award for outstanding production of a play. The Convery won six Ovation Awards and the Los Angeles Outer Critics Award.
ABOUT THE PLAY
Danai Gurira’s play, Familiar received its world premiere at Yale Repertory Theatre directed by Rebecca Taichamn. The play is about a Zimbabwean family that is preparing for the wedding of their eldest daughter, Tendikayi (addressed as Tendi in the play), who is a first-generation American. Throughout the play, there is a conflict between traditional Zimbabwean wedding practices that her family wants her to participate in and traditional Christain wedding practices that Tendi wants to do. The play revolves around African-American identity and the clashing cultures and traditions.
