ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Rare Earth Mettle is written by Al Smith. Al Smith studied English literature during his undergraduate years at Edinburgh University. He holds a degree from the BBC Writers Academy. He has participated in the Paines Plough/Channel 4 Future Perfect Scheme and has been a Pearson Playwright in Residence at the Finborough Theatre. Winner of the BFI Wellcome Trust Screenwriting Award in 2012. His Radio 4 series “Life Lines” received Best Series at the 2017, 2019, and 2022 BBC Audio Drama Awards, as well as Gold at the ARIAS for Best Fictional Storytelling.
ABOUT THE PLAY
Underneath a Bolivian Salt Flat, a treasure of lithium awaits. The play starts of with a leading doctor, who thinks she can find a cure to the British mental hearth crisis. On the other hand, there is billionaire from Silicon Valley, thinks he can develop affordable electric automobiles, and save the planet. And lastly, a community of Indigenous people, who have been protecting the area for generations. Who should the lithium belong to? Who is fighting for the greatest good?

Play Date is a monthly play reading activity, held on the third Thursday of each month. We read one play from around the world together. The play reading is followed by a group discussion about the play. Anyone is welcome to join and practice reading out loud, regardless of experience or level of English comprehension.
