ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Water By The Spoonful is written by Quiara Alegra Hudes. Writer, barrio feminist, wife, and mother of two. Quiara Alegra Hudes is from West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Her plays and musicals have received praise for their vibrancy, intellectual rigour, and rich imagination. They have been presented all over the world. Trained as a composer, writes at the nexus of music and play. A graduate of Yale University with a BA in music composition, and her experience in the performing arts has influenced her playwriting. She also holds an MFA in playwriting from Brown University. She is a playwriting professor at Wesleyan University and a playwright in residence at Signature Theatre in NYC.
ABOUT THE PLAY
The Iraq War veteran Elliot Ortiz’s battle to find his place in the world while being haunted by ghosts from his past is the subject of the novel Water by the Spoonful. After a family member passes away, Elliot discovers that his world and his biological mother’s, who runs an online chat room for addicts in recovery like herself, are converging. Quiara Alegra Hudes deftly discerns patterns of sincere love, forgiveness, and restoration as families fragment and clash in real life and online.

Play Date is a monthly play reading activity, held on the third Thursday of each month. We read one play from around the world together. The play reading is followed by a group discussion about the play. Anyone is welcome to join and practice reading out loud, regardless of experience or level of English comprehension.
