Malachy and the Elephant

A March Break Puppet Show in Mississauga

A Prisoner, an Elephant, and an Unexpected Bond

Malachy is far from the Ireland he once called home. Princess Rita is far from Mozambique. They meet at Toronto’s Riverdale Zoo, where Malachy, a prisoner at the Don Jail, has been sent to care for her.

Two lives behind barriers

As he looks back on his life, Malachy finds something familiar in Rita’s situation. Both have been displaced and confined; neither has much say in what happens next. Caring for her gives him a connection he did not expect.

Strings Attached tells their story through puppetry, with moments of humour and tenderness alongside its harder questions about captivity, immigration, and loss.

A March Break theatre outing for older audiences

Malachy and the Elephant is an English-language puppet performance for ages 12 and up. This 55-minute production brings a little-known Toronto story to Puppet Festival Mississauga 2027.

See it at Maja Prentice Theatre on March 16 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. or March 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

About The Company

Strings Attached is a visual theatre company founded by Kate Hemblen and Glyn Thomas, dedicated to bringing Toronto’s hidden histories to life through puppetry.

We explore the lost, overlooked, and unexpected stories of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area – animating the “tide marks” history has left behind. From forgotten storefronts and hidden back alleys to half-remembered family tales, we transform fragments of the past into vivid, imaginative performance.

Toronto’s rich and complicated history surrounds us, waiting to be uncovered. Through innovative visual storytelling, Strings Attached aims to spark curiosity, connection, and conversation about the city’s diverse heritage—inviting audiences to see familiar places in entirely new ways.
