Gary Thomas
Gary Thomas is a programmer and curator based in Derby, UK. With Abigail Addison, he founded Animate in 2007; they curate and produce arts projects at the intersection of animation, film and the visual arts. Recent projects include I’m Only Human, three short films made in the context of the COVID-19 lockdown, and WORK, four artists’ films exploring contemporary work, made with workers. Individual films include I’m OK, by Elizabeth Hobbs, an Animate Projects/National Film Board of Canada, which was a BAFTA British Short Animation nominee in 2019. Gary also works as a Film Programme Manager at the British Council, the UK’s organisation for cultural relations.
Animate works at the intersection of film, art and animation. Led by Abigail Addison and Gary Thomas, since 2007 we established a reputation for high quality, innovative, experimental and engaging films, and for producing projects for exhibition across broadcast, cinema, festival, gallery, public, online and digital platforms.
We’ve worked with more than 150 artists, animators and filmmakers and our partners have included: The Photographers’ Gallery, London; QUAD Derby; Art on the Underground; Flatpack Festival Birmingham; Edge of Frame; Whitechapel Gallery; and the National Trust. Our supporters have included: Arts Council England, Jerwood Arts, Wellcome Trust, Channel 4, and BFI.
Animate began in 1990, as an Arts Council England/Channel 4 commissioning scheme – an annual, open call for proposals for short, experimental animation projects. You can see the Animate archive collection at http://animateprojectsarchive.org/

Founded in 1984, The Toronto Animated Image Society initially began as a group for animators and animation enthusiasts to connect and share in an art form they love.
Incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1990, TAIS opened our first studio space in 2002. We became a registered charity in 2012, and then in 2013 we moved to our current home, a 1560 sq.foot space located on Dufferin Street north of Dupont, in downtown Toronto’s north/west-end. This facility allows us to better facilitate artists’ research and creation, and deliver public outreach programs.
