About Rawley
Originally from Baltimore, Rawley Grau has lived in Ljubljana since 2001. In addition to Ivan Cankar’s Depravity in St. Florian Valley, he has also translated Slavko Grum’s expressionist play An Event in the Town of Goga (with Nikolai Jeffs).
Other translations from Slovene include two novels by Dušan Šarotar, Panorama and Billiards at the Hotel Dobray, both of which were shortlisted for the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize; Mojca Kumerdej’s award-winning novel The Harvest of Chronos and her short-fiction collection Fragma; the novels Blind Man by Mitja Čander, A Chronicle of Forgetting by Sebastijan Pregelj, Dry Season by Gabriela Babnik, The Succubus by Vlado Žabot; and the short-fiction collection Family Parables by Boris Pintar. From Russian he has translated and co-edited a collection of poems and letters by the nineteenth-century poet Yevgeny Baratynsky, A Science Not for the Earth, which was awarded the AATSEEL Prize for Best Scholarly Translation. An earlier version of his translation of Scandal in St. Florian Valley was staged by the Chronos Theatre Group under the director Ivan Rupnik at the Victory Theater in San Diego in 2012.

About the book
Cankar’s play reveals the tension between the idea to conform and to rebel. He vividly brings to life a world of a small minded village, symbolizing Slovenia, growing impatient and petty with an artist, an individual who refuses to conform to their silly demands, lies and intrigues.
